On 14th July, 1915, the 23rd London battalion of 142 Brigade, 47th Division were relieved from the trenches at Nouex-les-Mines near Loos in France and moved back into reserve in Mazingarbe.On 21st July Algernon Clarke was badly wounded in both legs when a German shell exploded in the room in which he was resting with other officers. He died from these wounds on 24th July.
